Can I Take Water Bottles Through Airport Security?

Accruing to The TSA you can bring a bottled water through the security checkpoint, but any bottle must be 3.4 ounces / 100 ml or less and placed in a single quart-sized.

Here is what the TSA say about a filled water bottle.

So whether it is distilled or spring water The TSA 3-1-1 liquid rule is non-negotiable.

The only exception that the TSA has is when a passenger is traveling with a child (for baby formula).

In this case, you can bring a full size filled bottle of water along with other baby food and equipment, but in reasonable quantities.

So if you are not traveling with a baby, you will need to empty your large bottle before going through the security checkpoint, and if you want to stay hydrated you can fill it again after you pass security.

Even unopened bottles of 12 oz / 355 ml will not be accepted.

I wanted to find more answers from the TSA social media.

Here is an answer from the TSA customer service.

@Judelqui wanted to bring this stainless steel water bottle in carry-on baggage.

Screenshot of a tweet asking @AskTSA if a stainless steel water bottle can be brought in a carry-on bag, with a photo showing a metal water bottle on a desk in front of a keyboard and computer monitor.

The AskTSA team replied that empty metal containers are allowed through the screening checkpoint and in carry-on bags.

All passengers are subject to additional screening, even if they are TSA Precheck members.

You can bring both an empty and filled water bottle in checked baggage without any issues.

However, ensure that your bottle is well secured so the water won’t mess up your items.

We have already covered everything you need to know about traveling with liquids in checked baggage.

Although, sometimes it is better to avoid placing water in a checked bag because it will add some weight.

In addition, you can easily find water at your destination.

You may also mess up your belongings and your suitcase in case the water bottle leaks.

Are There Any Restrictions On The Type Of Bottle You Can Bring?

Nope, you can bring any type of empty bottle you want.

Whether you ant ottos ring a plastic water bottle, a stainless steel , glass, or metal you are good to go.

Even though you will need to make sure that it does not have any prohibited items.

For example, a water bottle that is decorated with some type of long metal spikes that can be used to hurt someone.

You may have a hard time convincing the security officer at the airport.

But in general, most airlines and airport securities do not mind if the bottle is steel, plastic, or glass.

Water, or liquids in general, have almost the same restrictions whether you are traveling on a domestic or an international flight.

You can only bring a water bottle that is  3.4 oz / 100 ml or less when going through the security checkpoint.

But you can fill or buy a water bottle once you clear the security.

It doesn’t matter what airline you are flying with, but if you want to buy bottled water it may be a bit pricey at some airports or even on board the airplane.

I always like to bring a bought at a store water bottle and drink it on my way to the airport and keep the empty bottle, or sometimes I fill my Hydroflask just after I clear the security.

But when traveling with a bottle like a Hydroflask, you may need to remove the lid as you go through security to prove it’s empty.

Some airports in Europe are getting new smart scanners. so travelers may be able to bring large bottles of liquids on the plane. Instead of small 3.4 oz / 100 ml bottles , in carry-on bags. This change started around 2024 and is still happening in 2025 and 2026

Final Thoughts

Now as you know that you can’t bring a full size filled bottle of water that is more than 3.4 oz / 100 ml in carry-on.

Because of the limits on the quantity of liquids you can take on board airplanes, while there are less restrictions for checked baggage.

The rules apply to both domestic and international flights.

If you want to bring a bottle of water to drink during your flight, ensure that you take an empty bottle and refill it once you pass the  airport security.

I hope this helps.

Happy travels.
