It’s not always clear how much airlines are going to charge you for your bags when you book your flight, especially when you have an extra suitcase that is a little larger or a little heavier than what the airline allows.
But the good thing is that you can use this luggage fee calculator to get an estimate of what you’ll end up paying for your baggage before you book your flight and don’t know these fees yet.

How To Use This Luggage Fee Calculator?
Here is how to use it:
- Choose your airline from the drop-down menu (such as United, Allegiant Air, or American Airlines).
- Select domestic or international flight.
- Select your cabin class: Economy or Business.
- Input the number of carry-on bags you will have, along with the weight of each.
- Choose how much checked baggage each passenger will bring and its weight.

How Do Airlines Calculate Luggage Fees?
Airlines have simple rules for applying carry-on and checked bag fees:
What matters, they say, are four things:
1. Free Baggage
Some airlines allow one or two complimentary bags, particularly on international trips.
This includes a free carry-in bag and a personal item.
But your first checked bag is not free on some U.S. flights.
Be sure to see what’s included with your ticket; free bags can depend on both the airline, flying class and where you destination.

2. Extra Baggage
This means the more bags you bring the more fees you will pay.
For example:
- 1st bag: Free
- 2nd bag: $40
- 3rd bag: $150
Each extra bag usually will cost you more than the last one.
3. Overweight Baggage
Usually each bag needs to not go over a weight limit of 23 kg (50 lbs).
If your bag is too heavy, the airline adds an extra fee.
Example:
A 30 kg (66 lbs) bag might cost an extra $100
4. Oversized Baggage
Bags that are above the size also will cost more.
Airlines measure the total size in linear inches (height + width + length).
If it’s over 62 inches, you may need to pay an extra fee, often $100 to $200.
So how do these charges get so hefty?

For Example
You’re flying on Airline X.
Their rules say:
- 1st bag: Free (up to 23 kg)
- 2nd bag: $40
- Overweight fee: $100 if over 23 kg
You bring:
- Bag 1: 20 kg (Free)
- Bag 2: 26 kg (Extra + Overweight)
Let’s add it up:
- 2nd bag fee = $40
- Overweight fee = $100
- Total = $140
