Well, the answer is Yes.

You can bring your longboard through the security checkpoint, however, you will need to confirm with your airline beforehand, as most longboards are above the airlines carry-on size limits.

You can pack your longboard in checked baggage without any issues.

In this post I will walk you through everything you need to know about traveling with your longboard in both carry-on and checked baggage.

Let’s learn more.

Can You Take a Longboard Through TSA?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) mentioned longboards on its website.

They stated that longboards are permitted through the security checkpoint.

Here is a screenshot from the TSA website.

However, it is important to understand that while the TSA has given the green light, it does not mean that you can simply pick up your longboard and head to the airport.

That is why I checked the TSA social media to find a more detailed answer.

The TSA customer service replied that longboards are good to go in carry-on and checked bags. but they advise asking your airline as they set baggage policy including any fees.

This means that you won’t have any issues with a small longboard, but a large longboard will need the airline approval.

In case the longboard is accepted as carry-on you may need to remove your longboard from its case at the security checkpoint for additional inspection.

Can I Bring Longboard As Carry-on Baggage?

Now that you know the TSA does not have any issues with taking longboards through the security checkpoint.

It all comes to your airline.

Most airlines will allow a longboard on board the airplane if it is within their size and weight limits.

In fact most airlines are only strict with the carry-on size instead of the weight, it muse fit in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you.

And It should be no surprise that some longboards can be as long as 59 inches.

It should come as no surprise that some longboards are long, and they can be as long as 59 inches.

Makes perfect sense because they are already called ‘longboards’ .

So you will need to measure your board, and if the size is below the airline size limit then you are good to go otherwise you will need to send your longboard as checked baggage.

The standard size for most US airlines is 22 in x 14 in x 9 in / 55 x 35 x 22 cm.

Some airlines may calculate the size of carry-on in linear inches.

The linear inches is the total of the three dimensions (height + length + width), and the majority of the airlines apply it for checked baggage.

Example: 22″ + 14″ + 9″ = 45 linear inches

And even if your airline calculates their carry-on size this way, I don’t think a longboard will qualify as hand luggage.

That is why you need to consider checked baggage.

Some airlines will consider a longboard as a piece of standard checked baggage if it doesn’t fit inside your suitcase, and will be subject to their standard maximum weight and size restrictions.

While others will count it as a sport equipment, and different rules and charges will apply.

The popular standard total linear size is 62 linear inches. However, most longboards do not exceed these dimensions.

Before you travel, make sure to review your specific airline luggage size and weight restrictions. Longboards might be subject to additional fees even if treated as standard checked baggage.

There are always some cons for packing these items in the luggage hold, such as potential damage or theft.

In some cases renting a longboard or shipping your own to your destination may offer more convenience and cost savings.

But they can be transported in checked luggage.
