Can You Bring Soda On a Plane? 2026 Domestic And International

A can of soda is the most drink travelers want to enjoy during a flight, but can you actually bring soda on a plane? And can you pass through the security with an open can of soda?

Generally, yes, you can bring soda on a plane in carry-on and checked bags, however, in carry-on any can, bottle, or glass you want to bring must be 3.4 oz / 100 ml or less, and placed inside a quart sized bag, while you can place large cans of soda in checked bags.

This post covers how soda is treated at airport security, an d everything else you need to know about taking soda on planes, in both domestic and international flights.

Let’s find out more.

TL;DR

  • You can bring soda on a plane.
  • Normal-size cans or bottles (8 oz. 12 oz.  16 oz.  20 oz.) can’t go through airport security in your carry-on because soda counts as a liquid and must follow the 3.4 oz / 100 ml rule.
  • Larger sodas are fine in checked luggage with no quantity limits.
  • You can simply buy soda after security and take it onboard.
  • Soda cans will not explode on board or in the cargo, but they can leak if dented or poorly packed, especially in checked bags.
  • The same rules apply for soft drinks on domestic and international flights.

Can You Bring Soda Through Airport Security?

If you are traveling within the U.S, then I guess you are already familiar with the TSA (Transportation Security Administration), the agents that screen items at airports to ensure the safety of passengers and crew members.

They have the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, all liquids passing through security must be 3.4 oz (100 ml) or less, placed inside a quart sized bag, and only one quest sized bag for each individual.

This is a screenshot from the TSA website and what they say abut soda.

Screenshot showing TSA soda rules: carry-on allowed only up to 3.4 oz (100 ml), checked bags allowed, with a note about screening items

So since soda is counted as a liquid, you can only bring soda in carry-on if the can is 3.4 oz / 100 ml.

This rule applies regardless of whether the soda is opened, unopened, carbonated, or flat.

Ok the TSA, but I never encountered a can of soda that is small than 3.4 oz / 100 ml.

A sealed bottle of soda is treated the same way as a bottle of water.

So if you bring a can of soda that is 7.5 oz / 220 ml for example, and you drink from it, the security officer will ask you to leave it or drink it before you pass through.

There is no exception just because the can is not a full size, unopened a diet soda or non alcoholic.

I also wanted to find some answer from the TSA social media.

In the screenshot bellow Roberst is flying on Frontier and want to know if he can bring an unopened bottle of soda or water on board.

Screenshot of AskTSA on X explaining that sodas and liquids over 3.4 oz must go in checked bags, while small containers are allowed in carry-on bags.

The TSA team replied that beverages like soda in carry-on must be in containers that are 3.4 oz / 100 ml or less, the containers must be placed in a quart sized bag along with other ravel sized liquids.

Can I Put Soda In Checked Luggage?

You can carry a 12 pack of soda cans in checked luggage.

There are no limits to the amount of liquids and soft drinks you can pack in your checked bag, but you need to keep in mind your luggage weight and size, as soda is heavy, you can exceed the weight limit without even realizing it.

You can pack soda cans, plastic bottles, or glass bottles in checked luggage as long as your bag stays within your airline’s weight allowance.

Remember that it is better to keep soda in its original packing, so the security officer can easily identify what is indie.

This is also as screenshot from X for a user asking if he can put bottles of soda in a checked bag.

AskTSA on X confirms unopened soda bottles are allowed in checked luggage with no quantity limits

The AskTSA replied that bottles of soda are allowed in checked bags with no quantity limits.

They didn’t finish the answer about the air pressure, but obviously they recommend reaching out to the airline .

Why Buying Soda After Security Is Always Allowed?

Once you clear the security checkpoint, the 3.4 oz / 100 ml liquid no longer apply.

Any soda you buy inside the secure area of the airport you can bring it on the plane.

This includes bottled soda, canned soda, and fountain drinks purchased from airport restaurants or shops.

You can take these drinks onto the airplane and enjoy them during the flight.

The reason this works is simple: items sold after security are considered already screened.

This is why buying a full-size soda after security is the easiest and most reliable way to bring it onboard.

But the prices may be a bit higher in some airport shops.

Can You Drink Soda on the Plane?

If you don’t like the soda that airlines serve as part of their beverage service (or to save money on board), you can bring your favorite type of soda and drink it during the flight.

I’m a fan of Coca Cola  so I always pick up a can after I pass the security and enjoy while watching a movie.

Not that if you open a can of soda on a 30000 ft the pressure can cause carbonation to release more quickly, which is why you can may fizz aggressively when opened. So opening the can slowly to prevents any spills.

Will Soda Cans Explode in Checked Luggage?

As I mentioned above a soda can carbonation can release more quickly when you open it, but will not explode.

The asme goes with checked baggage, as both the aircraft cabin and the cargo hold are pressurized.

The pressure difference during flight is not strong enough to cause a sealed can or bottle of soda to burst.

If soda exploded due to altitude alone, airlines would not be able to transport beverages at all.

But there are something you need to worry about.

A soda will not explode, but it can leak or break, especially glass bottles.

Checked bags are not handled carefully.

Bags are tossed around during transit.

A dented can or a loosen bottle cap may cause a slow leak, that will mess all your items.

So  you need to always men sure your soda is packed carefully.

Wrap the cans or bottles in clothing or bubble wrap to prevent them from any impact.

Also you can place soda inside a sealed plastic bags and place it in the center of the suitcase to add some extra protection.

Otherwise if you want to keep your pack of soda cold and fresh, use a cooler.

High altitude will not make a soda can explode, but in cold conditions, a soda can are highly likely to occur at or below 32°F (0°C), the freezing point of water.

Can You Bring Soda On International Flights?

When traveling within or from the U.S the TSA Rules are in effect, but liquid rules are universal and almost the same in every country.

Most airports around the world apply the 3.4 oz / 100 ml rule for liquids in carry-on.

This means that soda have the same limits on domestic and international flights.

But if you want to bring a large quantity to another country and pass the customs, it is another story, because it will rise some questions.

But in generally taking a few cans of soda to another country is permissible.

Final Thoughts

Wether you can t to bring, Cola, Lemon lime soda, Orange soda or Grape soda on a plane, you can do so.

But in carry-on a normal sized soda cannot pass through airport security as it is mora than 3.4 oz / 100 ml.

It is easy to buy soda after security or pack it in checked luggage.

Soda will not explode on planes, but leaks can happen if it is not packed properly.

Once you understand that soda is treated like any other liquid at security and like any other beverage onboard the rules become straightforward.

I hope this helps

Happy travels.
