Can You Take a Hair Comb Through TSA Airport Security?

The TSA Transportation Security Administration are the folks that control what you can and can’t take through the security checkpoint on flights within and from the U.S.

They didn’t specifically mention combs on their website.

But I find some answers from their social media, mainly X (Formerly Twitter).

Here is what the AskTSA team answered Revian about taking this black tail plastic comb.

A simple “Yes, your comb is allowed. Safe travels”

Tweet showing a black rat-tail comb , with AskTSA replying that the comb is allowed for travel.

But replica comb knives or weapon-shaped items will not be accepted through the security checkpoint or in carry-on luggage.

As the TSA screenshot from the AskTSA bellow shows.

AskTSA answer that replica comb knives need too go in checked bags

Replica comb knives need to be packed in checked baggage.

That’s mainly because sharp objects can be used by someone with bad intentions to threaten the security of passengers and the aircraft.

It may not seem like a big deal, but most of the time their items get confiscated with a TSA agent.

If you have to, you can kindly tell the security officer that your item is essential or a gift; however, I don’t think they will agree when it comes to sharp objects. The final decision is always up to the airport security officer.

Note: I should point out that some passengers try to sneak sharp objects through the security checkpoint because they don’t have a checked bag, but it is not a good idea to do so, as this may result in some inconvenience.

How Do You Pack a Hair Brush Or a Comb For Travel?

Your hair care products, including your comb or hair brush, should always be in your carry-on or personal item.

Combs are small items that can be easily tossed anywhere inside your suitcase.

If you are taking a small comb, you can place it with your toiletries, but it is not necessary.

As always, I don’t recommend placing essential items inside your checked luggage unless you don’t have space in your carry-on.

Checked luggage is not 100% safe. There are cases where it can be broken, lost, or even stolen. In addition, most airlines will not compensate for certain items.
