What Is American Airlines Checked Baggage?

On demotic flights, transatlantic and trans pacific flights American Airlines passengers are permitted to check up to 10 bags per person.

If you are flying, to Mexico, the Caribbean, central / south American or Brazil then you can check up to 5 chanced bags.

But keep in mind that you can always expect some seasonal changes for these routes.

For all destinations the published size and weight for your checked bags is, max 50 lbs /  23 kg in weight and  62 linear inches /158 cm in size.

For first and business class checked bags must not exceed  70 lbs / 32 kg.

Note: when you measure your bag don’t forget to always include wheels and handles.

How Strict Is American Airlines With Checked Baggage Size and Weight?

American Airlines can be pretty strict when it comes to checked baggage, but there’s always some wiggle room.

The AA website says that a standard bag should weigh 50 lbs depending on your destination and be no bigger than 62 linear inches (length + width + height, including wheels and handles).

Sometimes, you might get away with a bag that’s just a little over these limits.

A few extra pounds or an inch or two beyond the size usually isn’t a big deal, especially in low season.

But if your bag is way over the limits, don’t expect the airline to not blink, fees apply immediately, and in some cases, your bag can be refused.

The airline needs to make sure the luggage can be safely handled and loaded, so these rules aren’t just about getting your money, they’re about safety and logistics too.

Oversized or overweight bags take more space, are harder to handle, and cost the airline more, so expect the fees to reflect that.

The bottom line? Measure and weigh your luggage before you leave for the airport, and if you are hesitant that it might be over the limit, consider pre-paying for an extra bag.

It’s almost always cheaper and way less stressful than dealing with surprises at the check-in counter.

How Much Does American Airlines Charge for Checked Bags?

If you are an AAdvantage or oneworld member, you might check up to 3 bags for free, but only on flights operated by American Airlines.

If you are flying domestically then you can have your first bag for $40 ($35 if you pay online)  and the second bag for $45.

The third bag will cost you a whopping $150 and any additional bags you bring will const $200 ( a brand new bag!! ).

On transatlantic flights, if you are flying Economy you are permitted to check one piece of baggage free of charge.

If you want to add any additional bag, there is a charge of $100 for the first additional piece and $200 for any additional pieces.

Please keep in mind that all fees are non-refundable, and the charges are for person, per check-in, per segment, even if your ticket includes free checked bags.

If you think you were charged incorrectly, contact you can contact the American Airlines within 45 days to file a refund claim.

What About Overweight or Oversized Bags?

If your bag exceeds the dimension or weight set by American airline baggage allowance, then excess baggage fees will apply.

For example if you are flying within the US, the Virgin island, Puerto Rico, and Canada, bags above 50 lbs / 23 kg, you will be charged $100 per piece.

Bags over 70 lbs / 32 kg will be charges $200 per piece, and a bag that exceeds 62 inches / 158 cm in total size will be shared a $200.

Bags that are 100 lbs/ 45 kg or more will not be accepted.

For flights between the US and Europe, bags weighing over 50 lbs / 23 kg but no more than 70 lbs / 32 kg will be charged $100 per piece, a bag that is above these weight will not be accepted at the airport.

A bag that exceeds 62 inches / 158 cm linear will be charges $150 per piece.

Pro tip: If your bag is slightly over, sometimes redistributing items between bags or moving things to carry-on can save you a fee.

  1. Pay online using the website to the AA app: the fees are usually cheaper online than at the airport.
  2. Measure and weigh your bags: Avoid surprises and last-minute fees.
  3. Consider extra bags: If your luggage is over the size or weight limit, pre-book an extra bag it’s cheaper than paying at the airport.
  4. Move items to carry-on: If your checked bag is slightly overweight, transfer items to your carry-on (as long as it meets size limits).

Final Thoughts

American Airlines can be strict when it comes to checked bags especially on busy flights, but it’s not impossible to stay on top of it.

If you measure and weigh your bags carefully, pay for extra bags in advance, and know the rules for special items, you can usually avoid any nasty surprises at the airport.

I witnessed passengers get away with a bag that’s just a few pounds over the limit, and others who end up paying more than they expected.

So how strictly they enforce the rules often depends on the season, how busy the airport is, and even the check-in staff you encounter.

If you know your bag might be a little too heavy or oversized, pre-pay for an extra bag online. It’s almost always cheaper and definitely less stressful than scrambling at the airport.

A little planning will save you a lot of headaches and even a few dollars.

I hope this helps

Happy travels
