What Is Air Mauritius Baggage Allowance?

Air Mauritius is known for having one of the most generous baggage policies out there, but that doesn’t mean there are no rules.

Before packing your bag with everything you need for your island adventure it is important to know how many bags you can carry on Air Mauritius.

Economy passengers can bring 1 carry-on bag up to 7 kg (55 × 35 × 25 cm), while Business Class allows 2 pieces at the same size and weight.

Checked baggage can weigh up to 32 kg per piece with maximum dimensions of 158 cm (L + W + H).

In this post, I’ll break down exactly what the limits are, how strictly Air Mauritius enforces them, and what might happen if your bag’s a little over.

Plus, I’ll cover everything else you need to know about their baggage policies from hand luggage to sports gear and oversized items.

Let’s get into it.

What Is Air Mauritius Hand Baggage Allowance?

Air Mauritius guests are allowed the following carry-on baggage:

  • Economy Class: 1 piece of hand baggage weighing up to 7 kg, with dimensions not exceeding 55 cm (height) × 35 cm (length) × 25 cm (width).
  • Business Class: 2 pieces of hand baggage, each weighing up to 7 kg.

In addition to the carry-on allowance, you may also bring personal items such as:

  • An overcoat, wrap, blanket, umbrella, walking stick
  • Laptop, camera, binoculars
  • Infant items (e.g., carrying basket, baby food for in-flight use)
  • A reasonable amount of duty-free purchases

All cabin baggage must be stored either under the seat in front of you or in the overhead compartments. For safety reasons, baggage must not be placed behind your legs, in the aisles, or in front of emergency exits.

Excess Hand Baggage

  • Economy Class: Additional excess up to 5 kg may be allowed for a surcharge.
  • Business Class: Additional excess up to 10 kg may be allowed for a surcharge.

Important: The maximum weight per piece of hand baggage is still limited to 7 kg, regardless of the surcharge.

Some airports may have more restrictive conditions regarding carry-on items. Passengers may be required to have their hand baggage tagged at check-in.

Piece and Weight Concepts

Air Mauritius uses two types of baggage allowance systems:

  • Weight Concept: Based on the total weight (in kg) shown on the ticket.
  • Piece Concept: Based on the number of pieces, with each piece subject to a maximum weight limit.

The baggage allowance applies per passenger, including children aged 2 and above.

Infants

  • General: 1 piece of 23 kg
  • Mauritius–Rodrigues flights: 1 piece of 5 kg

Note: If your flight includes a transatlantic or transpacific segment, the baggage policy of the operating airline on that segment may apply.

Additional Baggage Allowance with Air Mauritius

Extra / Heavy / Oversized Baggage / Sports Equipment

Transporting memorable or essential items? Air Mauritius allows extra luggage for a surcharge, so you can travel with all your necessities.

If your baggage dimensions exceed 300 cm, prior arrangements are necessary for cargo shipping.

How to Purchase Extra Baggage

Oversized Baggage

Baggage with total dimensions between 158 cm and 300 cm is accepted for an additional fee, payable at the airport. Charges vary by itinerary.

Sports Equipment Policy

Surfboards

Planning to enjoy Mauritius’s beaches? Air Mauritius welcomes surfing gear — surf, kitesurf, bodysurf, windsurf, or longboards.

Included in free baggage allowance if:

  • Dimensions are ≤ 200 cm
  • Weight is ≤ 23 kg (Economy) or ≤ 32 kg (Business)

Note: On ATR-operated flights (to/from Rodrigues or Réunion), surfboards must be ≤ 180 cm.

If dimensions exceed 200 cm (up to 300 cm) or if baggage exceeds weight allowance, excess charges apply. Weight and piece charges cannot be combined.

Golf Equipment

Each passenger is allowed one golf bag (up to 20 kg) free of charge, if it contains only golf equipment. Additional bags are charged per piece.

Other Sports Equipment

For equipment not specifically listed (e.g., diving gear, archery), Air Mauritius allows them within baggage allowance if:

  • Dimensions are ≤ 200 cm
  • Weight is ≤ 23 kg (Economy) or ≤ 32 kg (Business)

Excess fees apply if your total checked baggage (including sports equipment) exceeds the free allowance.

Final Thoughts

Now Let’s address the elephant in the room, are Air Mauritius strict with baggage policies.

I can’t guarantee anything, and the rules are the rules, but from what I’ve seen, Air Mauritius doesn’t seem overly strict when it comes to cabin baggage as long as you’re not pushing it too far.

Stick close to the limits, don’t go overboard, and you’ll probably be fine.

That said, if you’ve flown with Air Mauritius recently and have any first-hand experience (good or bad) about how strict they really are with baggage, feel free to drop a comment I’d love to hear about it and will update this post accordingly.

I hope this helps

Happy travels
