Viva is a Mexican low-cost airline fully owned by the largest bus company group in Mexico, Inversionistas en Autotransportes Mexicanos S.A. changed its name to Viva in 30 October 2024, it operates flights to over 60 destinations.
If you’re flying with Viva, it’s important to be familiar with their luggage allowance and baggage policies.
In this post, I will cover everything you need to know about Viva baggage policies and how strict are Viva with carry-on baggage.
Let’s dive right in.
What Is Viva Aerobus Carry-on Policy?
Carry-On Bag
Viva allows passengers to have one carry-on bag that goes in the overhead bin and must stay within the following dimensions:
22 x 16 x 10 inches (55 x 40 x 25 cm).
Keep in mind that these dimensions include wheels and handles.
Weight limits depend on your ticket:
- Viva Light: up to 22 lbs (10 kg)
- Viva Smart: up to 33 lbs (15 kg)
Keep in mind If your bag is slightly over the limit in size or weight you’ll be required to check it at the gate and hit with a fee.
Viva doesn’t mess around when it comes to enforcement, so weigh your bag at home and avoid the airport up charge surprise.
Personal Item
No matter which ticket you have, you can take one personal item like a handbag, laptop bag, or small backpack.
But keep in mind that your personal item must fit under the seat in front of you and must not exceed:
18 x 14 x 8 inches (45 x 35 x 20 cm)
Anything larger risks being flagged, and yes they do check.

Final thoughts
Just like many of the low cost airlines, Viva keeps fares cheap up front, but makes up the difference with baggage charges.
So if you are not aware the “budget” word can end up costing you more than what you expected to spend, especially if you show up at the airport with an overweight bag.
So here’s the bottom line: measure your bag, weigh it, and stick to the rules.
