How strict are KLM with hand luggage? 2025

KLM Royal Dutch Airlines offers a generous luggage allowance.

But what is KLM’s baggage allowance, and how strict are KLM with hand luggage?

Find out everything you need to know about KLM’s international baggage policy, including hand luggage, checked baggage, and extra baggage size and weight.

How strict are KLM with hand luggage

What is KLM hand luggage?

If you’re traveling light, here’s what you’re allowed to bring on board:

Economy Class (both European & Intercontinental flights):

  • 1 carry-on bag: 55 x 35 x 25 cm (21.5 x 13.5 x 10 in)
  • 1 personal item: 40 x 30 x 15 cm (16 x 12 x 6 in) think a laptop bag or handbag
  • Total weight limit: 12 kg (26 lbs) combined

Business Class:

  • 2 carry-on bags: same dimensions as above
  • 1 personal item
  • Combined weight: up to 18 kg (40 lbs)

Your main bag should go in the overhead bin, while your personal item needs to fit under the seat in front of you. Backpacks work great here.

Is KLM actually strict about hand luggage size?

KLM is not always super strict about hand luggage size.

As long as your bag looks like it’ll fit in the overhead bin and isn’t obviously large, you’re unlikely to have any problems.

That said, don’t take my words for granted especially on full flights and peak seasons.

If your bag looks oversized, or if it clearly exceeds the weight limit, you may be asked to check it (and possibly pay a hefty fee).

Is KLM actually strict about hand luggage size and weight?

KLM isn’t known for being super strict.

It’s rare for staff to weigh your carry-on especially if you check in online and head straight to security.

That said, if your bag looks bulky or heavy, they might ask you to check it at the gate. So, if you’re borderline on the weight, wear your heavier items, also jacket with big pockets just in case.

KLM checked baggage rules

If you’re checking a bag, here’s the deal:

Economy Class:

  • 1 checked bag included
  • Max size: 158 cm (length + width + height)
  • Max weight: 23 kg (50 lbs)

Flying Blue Silver, Gold, or SkyTeam Elite/Elite Plus members? You get 1 extra checked bag free.

Business Class:

  • 2 checked bags included
  • Each can weigh up to 32 kg (70.5 lbs)
  • Elite members get 1 more for free

What if my bag is overweight or oversized?

Here’s where things get pricey.

If you go over the allowance, KLM will charge:

  • €55 – €100 for a second bag (if not included)
  • €70 – €240 per additional bag
  • €20 – €100 for overweight bags (23 – 32 kg)
  • Bags over 32 kg must be shipped as cargo (€100 – €300)

So, it is best to weigh your bag before heading to the airport.

KLM Special Baggage allowance

Because of limited space in KLM aircraft, you need to reserve for the transportation of some types of special baggage as early as possible no later than 48 hours before departure, you can easily do this on KLM.com, log in to My trip.

What You can’t bring on KLM?

KLM follows the usual rules but here are some of the more specific no gos and must-knows:

Liquids:

  • Max 100 ml / 3.4 ounces per item, all in a clear resealable 1L bag
  • Baby food, meds, and special diet items are fine (with proof)

Powders (to / from the US):

  • Max 350 ml per item in hand baggage

Lithium batteries:

  • Devices up to 100 Wh: fine in carry-on or checked
  • Spare batteries & power banks: carry-on only
  • Over 160 Wh? Not allowed

E-cigarettes:

  • Only in your hand baggage or on you
  • No charging or smoking onboard

Smart luggage:

  • Battery must be removable
  • Battery must fly in the cabin

Self-balancing devices (hoverboards, etc.):

  • Prohibited unless you have a disability (with advance approval)

You can find more about what to take in checked baggage here.

Final thoughts.

If your carry-on is slightly too heavy, you’ll probably be fine just don’t make it obvious. Use a soft sided backpack, check in online, and breeze through security.

But if your bag is oversized, especially a hard shell? Don’t risk it. KLM uses sizers, and there’s little room to negotiate.

At the end of the day, it’s better to play it safe.

Or better yet, grab a bag that’s perfectly within limits and never stress about it again.
